" The Office of Healthy Communities (OHC) is pleased to announce a new section of our website www.mass.gov/dph/ohc called Community Corner. Consistent with our mission statement we will provide weekly, statewide updates to strengthen capacity in communities across the Commonwealth. There are many valuable resources, trainings, outreach and education opportunities available in Massachusetts. We hope compiling this information in one place will help maximize these resources. "

Research Project Grant Opportunity with Faith-Based Organizations: Letters of Intent due February 9th!

The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) of the National Institutes of Health announced a Funding Opportunity for an exploratory and developmental research grant (R21).  Applications should include innovative and transdisciplinary interventions on health disparities, social determinants of health, health behavior and promotion, and disease prevention, jointly conducted with faith-based organizations or faith-motivated programs.  See excerpts below from the full announcement, which is available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-MD-10-004.html

Total funding: $2.5 million with up to 8 awards.

Common Pathways Public Service Request to the Community:
Remove Snow from Your Sidewalks, Ramps, Curbs, and Fire Hydrants!

Please take action with the following information to keep your neighborhood safe from the dangers of winter:

  • Owners are required by the City to remove snow and ice from sidewalks within ten (10) hours after snow ceases to fall.
  • Owners of property where fire hydrants are located must clear snow from around the hydrant.
  • The Police Department will enforce this ordinance.
  • The fine for failing to comply with the ordinance is seventy-five dollars ($75.00) per day.

The Massachusetts Association of Information and Referral Specialists (MAIRS) manages Mass 2-1-1, but the accuracy of their information depends on the rest of the community keeping them updated.
