The 2010 Census will be in Your Mailbox Soon!
Source:  Common Pathways/CHNA 8, U.S. Census Bureau

Help us to encourage your community to answer the survey!

When you do the math, it's easy to see what an accurate count of residents can do for your community.

  • It affects the numbers of seats your state occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Provide funding for better infrastructure.
  • Increase services such as rescuing disaster victims, disease prevention, market research, locate pools of skilled workers and more.

In fact, the information the census collects helps to determine how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure and services like:

  • Hospitals
  • Job training centers
  • Schools
  • Senior centers
  • Bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects
  • Emergency services
  • and others

Common Pathways
has worked with the local and regional representatives of the U.S. Census Bureau to produce 13 banners in both English and Spanish with encouraging messages for residents to take the Census in the coming months.  There is one banner for each CHNA 8 town (see Towns list at the bottom of this email) and several for the City of Worcester, one of which will be displayed in front of downtown’s City Hall soon.

Common Pathways would like to ask an organization from each of the CHNA 8 towns to host their banner and move it periodically to several public areas in town before and throughout the duration of the Census administration.  We need your help to let people know the importance of this undertaking!

Look for these banners around town!  Click on the pictures to see a larger view.

La Hora de Cena Saludable:  PASA Wants You!
Source:  The PASA Coalition of the Central MA YWCA

YWCA Central Massachusetts hosts “PASA” (Peso Sano Ahora/Healthy Weight Now) that addresses health disparities in the Worcester Latino Community.  The program aims to reduce the incidence of overweight and obesity that are linked to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and arthritis by reaching out to individuals and their families, healthcare providers and residents.

PASA offers:

  • Use of the pool, cardiovascular equipment or gym for patients referred by Great Brook Valley and Family Health Center.
  • Access for familes (adult and children) to the pool, gym, sauna, and classes every Friday, 5:30 to 9:00 p.m.
  • A healthy dinner "La Hora de Cena Saludable" with access to the pool and other facilities.
  • La Hora is a time for families in Worcester to learn how to make traditional Latino/Hispanic meals and how to make quick, economic food with greater nutritional value.

Over 40 people of diverse backgrounds and ages attended the first Hora de Cena Saludable on February 5th.  The event included a meal of traditional Sancocho (a meat and vegetable soup) and several break-out focus groups that discussed nutrition and physical activity.
It will be held on the first Friday of every month from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the YWCA.

Know About Risks to Your Babies, Born and Unborn
Sources displayed in full articles:  Click here.

According to an infant mortality study done by the SIDS Center of New Jersey concludes that despite improved education on safe sleep, infants are still exposed to multiple risks for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).  These risk factors include smoking by the mother and father, nonsupine sleep, upper respiratory infection, and others.  Results: Nonsupine sleep occurred in 70.4% of cases with data on position (159 of 226). Thirteen cases were of infants who were discovered prone, with an increased positional risk to 76.1%, in which 87% contained additional risks. Maternal smoking occurred in 42.6% (92 of 216) of the cases with data on this risk, and 98% among those cases had additional risks.  Click here to read the study's complete findings.

The aim of a separate study done by the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development was to determine if fetal death is associated with changes in the concentrations of a certain protein called sVEGFR-2 located in maternal plasma and amniotic fluid.  Click here and scroll down to read about this study and its impact on infant mortality and prenatal issues.
